I made IN SEARCHING as a short film in high school, and again in college. I learned that the Jon character was always deceptively tricky to portray because of the balance between his virtues and his flaws. This guy’s Jon performance is exactly what I needed for this movie. He’s the anchor that I depended upon the most. It’s been utterly heartwarming to see the world take notice and embrace him for his wonderful work on GREY’S ANATOMY. I’ve never seen an actor study more than him. Every question he asked me brought the character to life. He deserves everything that’s coming his way, and I can’t wait to see more of him.

Her life was not easy during the month that we shot this movie. Without going into detail, she was dealing with several stressful, tragic, and depressing situations that were happening outside of our project. But, she soldiered on like a complete professional, and I’ll always remember that. She’s a natural actor, but also an artist of multiple disciplines, with a style in her work that feels fresh and classic at the same time. She made sure that Michelle was tangible and grounded, and I’m excited for more people to see her on screen. Living proof that indie film still has no shortage of undiscovered talent.

I’ve been working with him since high school, and we kept making increasingly tricky short films until we were finally ready for our first feature. We grew up and developed our skills together and both made the jump from Park City Utah to Hollywood. It’s awesome to know we’re tackling this city side-by-side, and to have had his support and friendship this whole time. This is the most ambitious performance I’ve ever seen him take on. I wanted Cole to be played by someone that understood comedy - because of comedy’s connection to tragedy. With that dynamic, he somehow found a way to make you smile while simultaneously feeling the heaviness of Cole’s heart.

This guy knows how to embody a character. Always dialed in, always trying to improve from take-to-take. I found myself watching the raw footage of his performances in each scene, wishing I could just leave the camera on him the whole time - because of the detail he brought to each moment. Even though his character can be an asshole - he couldn’t be a nicer guy in real life. He even showed up on days he wasn’t scheduled to work to help us lug equipment around and whatnot! You can also catch him on ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK, and hopefully more soon. He’s so cool (how cool is he?), I can’t even tag him on social media.

I can’t believe I’m not only lucky enough to have had the support of my friends - but also to have made new friends during the making of IN SEARCHING. I was joined by a talented and dedicated team as this project was carried out. The opportunities to learn and grow through working together have been boundless, and I’m thankful.
This production effort meant a lot of different things to different people. The main characters in this film have been spinning their wheels, stuck in a phase of their lives - and pushing to actualize themselves. I found myself in a similar position going through the process of finishing this project. This experience was a portal into a new chapter for me, and I hope the movie comes to mean something to you too.

I knew I wanted to work on this when I saw Heather write this post (below). Watching her actualize herself has been the ultimate reward.

Buckle up kids, this one’s a doozy. When Colton jokes I’m in my “third 20s,” in a lot of ways, he’s right. Back in my first 20s, I was a child bride at 21. 19 years ago today, I married my best friend from church youth group, and at 21 I was one of the last of the girls in my church friend group to get married. Even though a pastor had taken me aside at 18 or 19 because he was “worried I was developing lesbian tendencies,” I naively assumed I was straight. In my head it was simple: gay people were going to hell, and I was totally going to heaven, so I why would I be gay? Besides, *everyone* loves the way women look–media definitely reinforced that–so my own attractions seemed normal.
Growing up in the 90s, people might have grown more politically correct, but homophobia was still pretty much the norm even outside my church circles. Don’t believe me? Watch an episode of Friends. And when you did see a “positive” representation of gay people on tv or in movies, it seemed like they were either super flamboyant or irrevocably traumatized. I didn’t see myself. I didn’t realize “gay” was big enough to include someone like me. I didn’t believe that you could make it all the way to adulthood and still be figuring out fundamental pieces of yourself, like who you wanna have sex with.The more and more I’ve let myself come out, the freer I’ve felt and the happier I’ve been. But as a lot of gay people (and not as many straight people) know, coming out is a process. This is the story Colton and I wanted to tell. With jokes.
